Noah & Xavier's Saviours

Story

Hi there,

This fundraising page is dedicated to two amazing little boys Xavier and Noah. Xavier's parents (David & Mel) and Noah's parents (Gordon & Laura) have spent considerable time at RCH and have seen first hand the world leading facilities and care that all children receive. To ensure that the hospital can continue its life saving work, we have decided to participate in Run for the kids and raise as much money as we can. We could never repay the hospital for all that they have done for our boys, but completing the run and raising funds is our way of giving back.
So please dig deep and donate to this truly worthy cause!
Below is a brief story of how RCH has given our boys a wonderful chance at life.

Xavier's Story.

Xavier is a twin born at 33 weeks with a serious congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. At 5 days old he underwent life saving surgery and spent many weeks in hospital at RCH. He returned to the hospital at 3 months old for a second heart surgery heart and will require another surgery when he is around 3-5years old. Xavier recovered well and was achieving so many of life's important goals. Unfortunately at 13months old, Xavier had a life threatening stroke and was rushed to the ICU at RCH. On the way to hospital in the ambulance he suffered a cardiac arrest. The team at RCH never gave up on Xavier and he spent over 1 week on a life support machine (ECMO) to take pressure off his heart and help him recover. After Xavier came off ECMO we could see the effects of the stroke as he had no movement on his left side. Xavier needed to re-learn everything including swallowing, drinking, eating solids, rolling over and sitting up by himself. We spent 2 months in hospital going through intense rehab sessions and seeing a number of specialists along the way.
Since being discharged in August 2015, Xavier has had numerous appointments and rehab sessions at RCH to improve his skills and gain movement and control of his left hand. Today Xavier is still one of the happiest boys and wants to explore and try everything. He is now walking and running around everywhere without any help. He is using his left hand to pick up objects and to assist his right hand whilst playing with toys. He will still need ongoing support from the rehab team to fine-tune his motor skills and continued monitoring and intervention regarding his heart condition. We are very thankful for all the help RCH has given to Xavier and our family.

This year Xavier's story is also being shared as part of the social media campaign for Run for the Kids. You can check it out here.

Noah's Story

Noah's life began like any normal baby boy until he reached 5 months old and began having seizures. Noah was taken to the RCH were over the next couple of weeks his seizures increased to as many as 60 a day. Numerous medications were tried which unfortunately didn't stop his seizures and he was diagnosed frontal focal cortical dysplasia of his brain. This basically meant that Noah had to undergo surgery to remove part of his brain to hopefully stop the seizures (due to his brain not being fully developed this couldn't be guaranteed).

Since leaving the hospital Noah unfortunately has had small focal seizures which have been controlled by ongoing medications. In September 2016 Noah underwent a second bout of brain surgery to remove a small part of his brain. We are happy to say since the second surgery he as yet has not had any further seizures and we keep our fingers crossed that it remains that way.

We can't thank the staff enough at RCH for their ongoing support and by participating in The Run 4 The Kids we hope to raise some money for a great cause.

We would really appreciate all our family and friends to show their support by joining our team and participating in this years run for the kids. We will be having a running team (14.6km) and walking / running team (5km). So if you cant run please feel free to join the kids in the 5km event.

Please help us to raise money for RCH to buy new equipment and continue saving the lives of children all around Australia and the world.

We know that without the amazing team at RCH Xavier and Noah wouldn't be who they are today.
